Art requires inspiration. A bit of our own spirit. The very word inspiration is "breathed upon". An act of the higher self, giving life to our thoughts and creative outbursts. Through meditation and a focus of our subconscious, perhaps we can all find more inspiration in our works. The mystical and mysterious art of fortune telling and divination stirs up a lot of debate, but if you break it down into a science, there is much we can learn from our subconscious and say that it's from GOD. The point of this project is to teach others how to relax their mind, and open their eyes to the idea of finding inspiration and answers in the unknown. With the help of divination, and their own free will.

As with all creatures, we are attracted to beauty. It is also in our nature to beautify, to manipulate forms and ideas that engage and please us. It is in our nature to make art, to be artists. The Bowerbird Workshop is an opportunity for people to develop their artist’s eye and to make art from simple found objects at Belle Isle. Participants can make little “bowerbird” nests, sculptures, collages, drawings, photos or whatever comes into their imagination. The idea is to find beauty within your reach, to create with what is around you, to cultivate your ability to see in the near.

This project presents a view of the patterns of a life that are not allowed to remain intact. As art explores life, Just Another Woman provides a new perspective on what and how women endure using painted rice formed into patterns resembling those commonly used in henna tattoos. Your interaction provides the perspective.

Come join a poi hooping workshop with single or double mini hoops! Learn how to hold the hoops and how to gently use gravity and the natural rhythm of your body to make the hoop spin. Hoops provided!

Make your own path! Pathway Patterns is an interactive medium and process. The medium is composed of thousands of small wooden parts painted with individual designs. Participants explore relationships, discover pathways, and build patterns by selecting and placing parts to aesthetically connect with parts placed by others. Over time and space, these patterns evolve into maps of personal and visual relationships. All patterns are temporary, and are different every time they are formed. Pathway Patterns is a creative, playful activity enjoyed by children from three to hundred years old.

Screen Printing to the People (SPTTP!) is an interactive space and activity allowing participants to walk away with modified clothing and custom patches which are made at the event. SPTTP! offers education on sustainable resources and community building skills at an individual level by empowering participants with an idea of who or what can be created. Featuring designs created by local Great Lakes artist - we'll be modifying your clothing with our screens, as well as helping you create your own FIGMENT Detroit patch. Come Screen Print with us!

Detroit is bringing its OWN thing to FIGMENT! This project brings a set of chairs embellished with found materials from all over Detroit as well as a collection of two demisional drawings depicting various images from around the City. Come set your seat in one of these thought provoking seats!

The Detroit Literacy Project invites FIGMENT Detroit participants to create their own Flags as part of their project Forever Free! Each flag is crafted from the pages of abandoned books and magazine, made complete by your own wish - for yourself, for others, for Detroit as a whole. The completed project will be desplayed at FIGMENT and then at Eastern Market on September 10th.

The Regurgitator asks the audience to consider their thoughts on the motivation of constant self referencing in the art world, and the empowering experience of facing ones own fears, by actively engaging with art. Come see just how it ASKs!

Make a wish and help things grow! Write down a wish for Detroit (or any wish) and help festoon our wishing tree! Wishes are written on biodegradable seed-embedded paper and hung on a ribbon line. If you would like a sheet of paper to plant, you can choose someone else's wish from the line to take and plant elsewhere--a bare patch of yard, a vacant lot, a flower bed, or somewhere unexpected. Eventually, the seeds will sprout from the wish-paper and Michigan wildflowers will grow, helping to provide a natural habitat for wild things and attracting butterflies and bees.
